Créé en 1988, le groupe est composé de quatre instruments: clarinette, trombone, piano et washboard. La formule surprend et séduit par son originalité et sa mobilité. Les succès remportés depuis 1988 dans toutes les parties du monde prouvent que cette formule, unique dans le monde du jazz traditionnel, apporte le souffle nouveau que l’on attendait. Convivialité, enthousiasme juvénile, humour, professionnalisme, choix d’un répertoire riche et sans cesse élargi (années 20 et 30, Fats WALLER, James P. JOHNSON, etc., mais aussi compositions originales et maintenant Duke ELLINGTON) et individualités musicales exceptionnelles liées par une solide amitié, voilà les ingrédients de PARIS WASHBOARD, dont les musiciens sont :

Daniel BARDA,
fondateur et leader de l’ensemble, est en réalité un chef d’orchestre symphonique et lyrique qui s’adonne le plus souvent possible à sa deuxième passion: le jazz traditionnel. Dans ce style de musique, il joue du trombone à coulisse avec vitalité et décontraction. Un récent sondage dans une revue spécialisée de jazz l’a classé meilleur trombone „New Orleans“ français. Aux Etats-Unis, on le compare souvent à James Archey, Turk Murphy et Kid Ory, trois des grandes figures du jazz américain. En 2013, Daniel Barda a fêté ses 50 ans de carrière et de trombone jazz, ainsi que la sortie de son 150ème album!

Alain MARQUET, est un clarinettiste unique. Son style tient de Johnny Dodds et du Sidney Bechet des années 20 : sonorité ronde et colorée, phrases souples et toujours pleines de broderies recherchées, dans lesquelles ne manquent ni l’inspiration, ni la musicalité, ni surtout une belle santé d’exécution

Louis MAZETIER, au piano : c’est le benjamin du groupe, mais il est déjà l’un des meilleurs pianistes „stride“ au monde. Son jeu époustouflant allie technique et précision à un formidable enthousiasme physique et mental. Sa main gauche assure les basses avec tant de maîtrise qu’il n’est point besoin à PARIS WASHBOARD de recourir aux services d’un bassiste! Ses idoles: James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, et Art Tatum.

Stephane SEVA, il joue du washboard : il s’agit d’une véritable planche à laver en tôle ondulée, que l’on frotte avec des dés à coudre au bout des doigts, et agrémentée de cymbales, cloche et wood-block. Mais il est aussi chanteur et anime le show du groupe à sa manière, tout en s’y intégrant parfaitement.

Les festivals
Depuis sa création, le groupe se produit dans de nombreux festivals de jazz internationaux, dont ceux de Sion (Suisse 1989), Marciac (France 1989 et 1995), Breda (Hollande 1990, 1995 et 2001), Nuits du jazz et du Boogie (Paris 1990, 1991 et 1994), Cully et Bex (Suisse 1991), Montlouis (France 1991), Dresden et Francfort (Allemagne 1993), Moodus (USA, chaque année depuis 1993), Molde (Norvège, 1994), Santa Rosa (USA, 1994 et 1995), Bienne (Suisse, 1995), Hamburg,  Braunschweig, Chemnitz et Berlin (Allemagne, 1996), Ascona (Suisse, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 et 2001), Kecskemet (Hongrie, 1997), Zürich-Meilen et Lichtensteig (Suisse, 1997), Toronto (Canada, 1997, 1998 et 2001), Bingen et Berlin (Allemagne, 1998, 1999 et 2001), Bruxelles (Belgique, 1999), Antibes (printemps 1999 et 2000), Foire de Paris (2000). A  Berlin le 11 mars 1998 a eu lieu une exceptionnelle rencontre avec l’Ensemble de cuivres de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin.

PARIS WASHBOARD,

c’est, notamment depuis 1992, 145 concerts aux U.S.A., des tournées en Nouvelle-Zélande et Australie (1992), Argentine et Uruguay (1994), Japon (1996), U.S.A. (1998 et 2000), des concerts réguliers et fréquents en Allemagne (entre 2 et 5 par mois depuis 1993), en Suisse et autres pays d’Europe, y compris…la France !

En 2001 

ont eu lieu une tournée en Allemagne (17-25 février), ainsi que la participation à de nombreux festivals (Breda, Toronto, Ascona, Connecticut, Berlin, etc…) et concerts ( Boston, New York, Londres, Athènes, Berlin et Lausanne, pour les plus importants).

En 2002

le groupe s’est produit aux festivals du Mont-Dore (F/63) et de Lauris (F/84) ainsi qu’à Berlin, New-York, au festival du Connecticut (c’était la dixième fois) et à Morristown (New Jersey), entre autres.

2003

a vu PW en Allemagne (20 concerts), en Suède, en Belgique, aux U.S.A. et…en France !

En 2004

PW tournera beaucoup en Allemagne (déjà 6 concerts de janvier à mars), et jouera dans deux festivals aux USA, (Connecticut et Californie), soit 21 concerts entre le 30 juillet et le 8 août !

2005

verra PW au Festival sur la Baltique (mai), en tournée au Vénézuela (juin), au Festival de Newcastle (G.-B., juillet) et de Orange County (Californie, USA, août)

… et plus pendant les années suivantes.

Les prix décernés

Le 19 décembre 1993, l’Académie de jazz a décerné à Daniel BARDA le Prix Sydney Bechet. Alain MARQUET en 1973, Christian AZZI en 1992 et Louis MAZETIER en 1993 ont été également lauréats de ce prix qui récompense le meilleur jazzman traditionnel français de l’année.

En mars 1997, le journal de jazz le plus lu au monde, MISSISSIPPI RAG, édité aux Etats-Unis, consacre sa une et les 7 pages suivantes à PARIS WASHBOARD, avec pas moins de 15 photos pour illustrer un article-fleuve. Faisant référence à cet article, le Festival du CONNECTICUT (U.S.A.), demande à PARIS WASHBOARD de s’y produire désormais chaque année.

NUMÉRO 4 AUX U.S.A. !

Au même moment, un autre journal américain, JAZZBEAT, à l’issue d’un sondage national, classe PARIS WASHBOARD au 4e rang des orchestres étrangers, devant de prestigieuses formations européennes (Chris BARBER, etc.).

CONCERTS À NEW YORK

Le 26 juillet 2001, PW a joué dans l’une des grandes salles new-yorkaise : le „92nd Street Y“, près de Central Park. Le succès fut tel que les organisateurs ont réengagé le groupe pour le même concert (en hommage à Fats Waller) le 25 juillet 2002.

PARIS WASHBOARD – Traditional Jazz

                        Founded in 1988, the band is made up of four instruments: clarinet, trombone, piano and  washboard. One can be surprised by its originality and its capacity of movements. The success they have had around the world since 1988 can demonstrate that this kind of group, absolutely unique in the trad jazz world, is bringing something new in a jazz style that started to get more or less worn. Conviviality, youthful enthusiasm, humour, professionalism, choice of a rich and still enlarged repertoire (from the ‘20ies and the ‘30ies, Fats WALLER, James P. JOHNSON a.o., but also original compositions and now Duke ELLINGTON), and exceptional musical individualities bended with a solid friendship, these are the ingredients of PARIS WASHBOARD, whose
musicians are :

                        Daniel BARDA, the band’s founder and leader, is actually a  symphonic conductor, dedicating himself as often as possible to his other passion : traditional jazz. In this style of music, his way of playing the trombone is both relaxed and full of vitality. A recent poll published in a jazz  magazine elected him best French „New Orleans“ trombone player. In the United States, he is very often compared with James Archey, Turk Murphy and Kid Ory, three of the greatest North American jazz figures. In 2013, Daniel Barda will celebrate his 50^th anniversary as a musician and trombone player and he will publish his 150^th album.

                        Alain MARQUET is a unique clarinet player. Stylistically, he is influenced by Johnny Dodds and  Sydnet Bechet in the 1920s : a round and colourful sonority, supple phrases always full of sophisticated embroideries, in which neither the inspiration nor the musicality are missing, nor above all a beautiful and strong execution.

                        Louis MAZETIER, the pianist, is the youngest in the band, yet he is already today one of the best „stride“ pianists in the world. His breathtaking style mixes technical precision with a tremendous  enthusiasm. His left hand masters the bass so perfectly that there is no need for PARIS WASHBOARD to require the services of a  bass player! His main influences are : James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Art Tatum.

                                            
                        Stephane SEVA, he is an excellent washboard player and he adds a large selection of percussion instruments including cymbals, wood-blocks, etc.  He is a singer and has a good deal of humour and performance spirit. He fits the band perfectly; since 2008 with Paris Washboard

Since its foundation, the orchestra has performed in the most famous international festivals, including Sion (Switzerland, 1989), Marciac (France, 1989 and 1995), Breda (Netherlands, 1990, 1995 and 2001), Nuits du jazz et du Boogie (Paris, 1990, 1991 and 1994), Cully and Bex (Switzerland, 1991), Montlouis (France, 1991), Dresden and Frankfurt (Germany, 1993), Moodus (USA, every year from 1993 to 2004), Molde (Norway, 1994), Santa Rosa (USA, 1994 and 1995), Bienne (Switzerland, 1995), Hamburg, Braunschweig, Chemnitz and Berlin (Germany, 1996), Ascona (Switzerland, every year from 1996 to 2004), Kecskemet (Hungary, 1997), Zûrich-Meilen (1997) and Lichtensteig (Switzerland, 1997, 2002), Toronto (Canada, 1997, 1998 and 2001), Bingen (Germany, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003) and Berlin (Germany, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002), Brussels (Belgium, 1999), Antibes (springs 1999 and 2000), the Paris Fair (2000), Lauris (France, 2002). In Berlin (Germany) on March 11, 1998, there was a fantastic meeting with the Berliner Philharmoniker Brass Ensemble.

PARIS WASHBOARD means, since 1992, 145 concerts in the U.S.A., tours in New Zealand and Australia (1992), Argentina and Uruguay (1994), Japan (1996), U.S.A. (1998), many concerts in Germany (between 2 and 5 monthly since 1993), Switzerland and other European countries, including… France !

In 2001, tour in Germany (February 17-25), and many festivals (Breda, Toronto, Ascona, Connecticut, Berlin, a.o.) and concerts (Boston, New York, London, Athens, Berlin, Lausanne a.m.o.

In 2002, the group has been playing at the festivals in Mont-Dore and Lauris (France), Connecticut (10th time !), and in concerts in Berlin, New York and Morristown (N.J.) a.o. .

2003: concerts in Germany (about 20), France, Switzerland ; festivals in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, France and USA (tour July 22-30).

In 2004, PW will play a lot in Germany (already 12 concerts between January and June), and at the festivals in Munich-Grünwald (June 18-19), Ascona (June 25-28) and in two festivals in the U.S.A. (Connecticut and California), in total 21 concerts between July 30 and August 8

In 2005,

PW plays in Newcastle (Jan. 21), Venezuela  (tour June 10-20), Germany (between 12-15 concerts), France (about 10 concerts), and at the festivals of „Ostsee Jazz Cruise“ (May 15-22), Newcastle (G-B, July 15-17), Orange County (Cal., USA August 4-7), Chicago  (USA, Sept. 1-4) and Berlin (end Nov.)

…. and a lot more concerts and festivals during the following years.

PARIS WASHBOARD performs at Le Petit Journal Saint-Michel (71 boulevard St Michel, Paris) the second Friday of each month (9.30 pm – 1.30 am) … subject to modifications but to be sure have a look at the link:

On  December 19, 1993, Daniel Barda was awarded the Sidney Bechet prize by the Jazz Academy. Alain Marquet in 1973 and Louis Mazetier in 1992 have also been the laureates of this prize, rewarding them as best French traditional jazzman of the year.

In March 1997, the American jazz newspaper MISSISSIPI RAG has published a 7-pages article about PARIS WASHBOARD, including a full photograph of the band on its front cover. Then the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival asked the band to come every year. 2002 will be the 10th appearance of the band.

#4 IN THE U.S.A. !

Nearly at the same time, another American jazz magazine, JAZZBEAT, mentioned PARIS WASHBOARD as #4 of the foreigner bands playing in the U.S.A.

The French Academy of Jazz has awarded the group PARIS WASHBOARD and his  CD „One More Time“, the

FATS WALLER PRIZE 1998

given to the best French Trad Jazz recording of the year.

The HOT CLUB DE FRANCE awarded the group PARIS WASHBOARD his

GRAND PRIX DU DISQUE DE JAZZ 1999

Paris Washboard – Traditioneller Jazz

Paris Washboard wurde 1988 gegründet. In der Band kommen vier Instrumente zum Einsatz: Klarinette, Posaune, Piano und ein Waschbrett. Die Erfolgsformel überrascht und bezaubert durch ihre Originalität und ihre Beweglichkeit. Der Erfolg, den die Band schon seit 1988 in allen Teilen der Welt genießt, zeigt ihre Einzigartigkeit in der Welt des traditionellen Jazz. Überall hat man Erwartungen durch Stauen ersetzt: Gemeinsames Erleben von miteinander, jugendlicher Enthusiasmus, Humor, Professionalität, ein reiches Repertoire, das immer wieder erweitert wird (20er und 30er Jahre, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, etc., aber auch Originalkompositionen und … Duke Ellington). Man zeigt in der musikalischen Gesamtheit eine besondere Individualität, die an solide Freundlichkeit gebunden ist. Die einzelnen Musiker sind:

Daniel Barda, Gründer und Leader des Ensembles, ist eigentlich Dirigent mit klassischer Ausbildung, der sich meist seiner zweiten Leidenschaft hingibt: Traditioneller Jazz. Bei dieser Art von Musik spielt er die Posaune mit Vitalität und Leichtigkeit. Bei einer Umfrage in einem Jazz-Blatt wurde er zum besten New-Orleans-Posaunisten  Frankreichs gewählten. In den USA hat man ihn mit James Archey, Turk Murphy und Jack Teagarden verglichen, drei Ikonen des amerikanischen Jazz. 2013 feierte Daniel Barda seinen fünfzigsten Geburtstag als Musiker und Posaunist und brachte sein hundertfünfzigstes (150) Album heraus.

Alain Marquet ist ein einzigartiger Klarinettist mit märchenhafter Virtuosität und tiefem Gefühl.
Sein Stil erinnert an Johnny Dodds und Sidney Bechet der zwanziger Jahre: Runder farbiger Klang, geschmeidige Klangpassagen, die geschmückt sind mit einfallsreichen Verzierungen, und dazu ein Übermaß an Inspiration, Musikalität und Ausführungsvitalität in Perfektion.

Louis Mazetier, Piano:  Er ist der jüngste der Band. Doch er ist schon einer der weltbesten Stride-Pianisten. Sein atemberaubendes Spiel vereinigt technische Fertigkeiten und Präzision mit physischer und mentaler Begeisterung. Seine linke Hand liefert die Bässe mit solchem Können, dass man nur selten auf die Dienste eines Bassisten zurückgreifen muss. Seine Vorbilder sind James P. Johnson, Fats Waller und Art Tatum.

Stephane SEVA spielt das Waschbrett. Bei diesem Brett handelt es sich tatsächlich um ein Waschbrett aus Wellblech. Über das Waschbrett führt man Fingerhüte, die auf den Fingerspitzen sitzen. Der Kang des Waschbretts wird von Stephane durch Zybal- und Klopfholzklänge abgerundet. Stephane Seva ist auch Sänger und bereichert die Vorstellung der Gruppe mit viel innovativem Geist und Humor.

Am 11. März 1998 spielten wir mit dem Kupfer-Ensemble des Philharmonischen Orchesters Berlin zusammen.

Paris Washboard steht für 145 Konzerte in den USA seit 1992, Tournees in Neuseeland, Australien (1992), Argentinien und Uruguay (1994), Japan (1996), USA (1998 und 2000), regelmäßige Konzerte

in Deutschland (zwischen 2 und 5 pro Monat seit 1993), in der Schweiz und anderen europäischen Ländern, einschließlich Frankreich.

2001 fand eine Tournee in Deutschland statt (17. bis 25. Februar) und zahlreiche Festivals (Breda, Toronto, Ascona, Connecticut, Berlin usw.) und Konzerte in Boston, New York, London, Athen, Berlin und Lausanne … und dies sind nur die wichtigsten.

2002 trat die Band auf den Festivals von Mont-Dore (F/63), Lauris (F/84) und Connecticut (… schon das zehnte Mal) auf und war bei Konzerten in Berlin, New-York , Morristown (New Jersey) und vielen anderen zu hören.

Konzerte 2003:

Deutschland (20), Schweiz, Belgien und Frankreich, Festivals in Deutschland, Schweden, Schweiz, Frankreich und den USA (Tournee vom 22. bis 30 Juli).

Konzerte 2004:

12 Konzerte in Deutschland, Festivals München-Grünwald (18.-19. Juni), Ascona (25.-28. Juni) und zwei Konzerte in den USA. Das sind zusammen 21 Konzerte zwischen dem 30.Juli und dem 8. August.

2005
wird PW auf dem Ostsee Jazz Cruise Festival auftreten (Mai), eine Tournee in Venezuela machen (Juni) und in Newcastle (England, Juli) und Orange County (Kalifornien, USA, August) zu hören sein. Bis zum heutigen Tage folgten weltweit viele weitere Konzerte und Festivals.

Alain Marquet (1973), Christian Azzi (1992) und Louis Mazetier (1993) erhielten ebenfalls diesen Preis. Er ist für den besten Musiker des traditionellen Jazz in Frankreich.

Im März 1997 widmete das in der Welt am meisten gelesene Jazz-Blatt Mississippi Rag, USA,

Paris Washboard 7 Seiten mit mehr als 15 Fotos. Nach diesem Artikel bat das Festival in Connecticut (USA) Paris Washboard einmal jährlich aufzutreten.

Jazz-Band Nummer 4 in den USA!

Zu dieser Zeit machte Jazzbeat, eine weitere renommierte Jazz-Zeitung, eine nationale Umfrage in den USA. Paris Washboard kam unter der Rubrik Beste Ausländische Jazzband auf den vierten Rang. Bekannte Bands wie Chris Barber und viele andere konnte man hinter sich lassen

Die Jazz-Akademie verlieh Paris Wasboard 1998 den Prix Fats Waller. Damit ehrte man die beste Aufnahme des traditionellen Jazz 1998 in Frankreich. Der Titel war One More Time.

Konzerte in New York

Am 26. Juli 2001 und am 25. Juli 2002 spielte PW in einem der sogenannten großen Säle von New York:

Dem 92nd Street Y, in der Nähe des Central Parks.

Der Hot Club de France widmete Paris Washboard und ihrem Album Caravan den

Grand Prix Du Disque de Jazz 1999.

Die Alben 1, 2 und 3 gibt es nicht mehr. Die Nummer 3 wurde mit der Nummer 13 wiederveröffentlicht. Das Album Stomp Off ist in Frankreich nicht mehr im Handel, es sei denn man kauft es direkt bei der Band.
